Rearrange your party
<<First Latest>>

Author Notes:

Morgenstern 25th May 2018, 9:39 PM edit delete
With things about sorted, you decide the party moving forward.

You, Ranse, and Inzo will head out and try to make some money. You've still got a little daylight left, so random encounters outside of town might not be a bad idea.

Valley will go get her piercings done, Justice can go help the less fortunate or otherwise do what good deeds she can find, and Lagrand can... uh... meditate.

You suspect that you could get a lot done giving orders to your non-active members. While their current missions are fairly solo, you think your inactive party members could even team up (still in groups of 3) to accomplish larger goals, if necessary.

You all head your separate ways, thanking the chefs on your way out of the bakers guild.

You stop off at a few shops before you leave town, and on the third try find one that sells mythril pins. You buy a set for 75g, and Inzo distracts himself with trying to finish his shield project while trailing along behind you and Ranse.

It's well into the evening as you exit Threeroads, and begin to wander toward the nearby woods. However, you don't even make it that far before--

You find yourselves caught between two pyre ants and a mantrap.

Ranse on the Mantrap (Fire likely good on plants, much less so on fire ants.)

Inzo takes on pyre ants.

Nast cast reinforce on Inzo's mech so it does not get burned. Poison when you can.
vilageoftheflame 26th May 2018, 12:08 AM edit delete reply
Inzo's mech has already been reinforced before, that enchantment is permanent, and getting too close to that mantrap seems like a very bad idea. A better idea might be to create a tornado on the plant monster and have Ranse blast fire into it. And have Inzo throw some gob juice at the pyre ant, those combined with whatever bodily fluid that creates their fire breath should make for quite the explosion.
ZincFingers 26th May 2018, 12:33 AM edit delete reply
If not the mech, reinforce the pyrocaster, don’t want some critical failure turning us all crispy.
Anonymous 26th May 2018, 4:18 AM edit delete reply
I don’t think reinforcing a wooden mech makes it fireproof... burning the mantrap sounds good, maybe just slash the pyre ants with the wind wand... it takes energy, but could kill them before they become a problem. Have inzo help with the mantrap, as the mech may help him survive at close range, and distract it from the... squishier party members.

Time for a fire-nado on the mantrap. Let Ranse finish it off.
Warn Inzo of pyre ant's fire shots against his wooden mech. Maybe he can make use of the shield.
With index finger and thumb, create a circle. Thrust the wind wand in. Retract and repeat. Do we get wind shot projectiles? Treat the wind wand as a flesh wand. Else, Wind slash uppercut.

+1 to making rude gestures.

Fire + Wood = Ash. I don't think reinforce is going to help on that front.

Just wind slash the ants, no need to try to preserve parts since Ranse already got her weapon. Let Inzo take the plant. See if Ranse can get any useful ingredients from that.

A wind slash cut clean through a pyre ant last time. Maybe if you aim it right maybe you can take both of them out in one attack, leaving Ranse and Inzo free to double team the mantrap with no fear of getting their asses torched.
Gallstone 26th May 2018, 1:38 AM edit delete reply
I agree Ranse and Nast should tackle the pyre ants while Inzo deals with the mantrap, at least initially.
Like the last time, run interference with the wind wand, cyclone them, let Ranse shoot fire into it, then slash while they're confused.
Make sure Inzo activates his Air filter; the mantrap might have toxic pollen or something.

I think the air filters are a passive ability. Would you be able to angel the wind slash and hit both ants in one swing?

First time posting really enjoying the story so far.
Eyebrows 26th May 2018, 3:10 AM edit delete reply
Slash the plant with the wind wand. It's the first one we've fought so we want to start off strong in case it's really tough, and we want to preserve it's parts.
1977 26th May 2018, 3:18 AM edit delete reply
I think Nast could take the pyre ants alone.
First a tornado so that they have to go around and then slash them with the wind wand.

Meanwhile Ranse and Inzo take on the mantrap.
Not so sure about using fire against it, Inzo's mech could be caught in it.
Maybe at first Inzo tries close combat.

After the fight ask Ranse which enemy you should face so she can build a lightning-cannon next.

Also, when we're not being mobbed with monsters, we really need to experiment with the wand and figure out what it can do.

In addition, it might help to know what lets the ants breathe fire. I doubt they'll explode from a fire blast igniting internal chemicals, or Ranse would likely have to worry about fuel for her weapon. But, depending on how Gob Juice works, it might be more effective. We might want Nast using the wind wand to run interference on the ants while Inzo bombs them, leaving Ranse to pour ant-napalm on Audrey II over here as an alternative starting turn.
Gandalf 26th May 2018, 1:30 PM edit delete reply
If all else fails we attack the plant from the inside. Maybe it's tough on the outside, but in there, in that pod, we'll hack it to bits!
Ghest 26th May 2018, 3:45 AM edit delete reply
If we're planning on more than one fight we shouldn't perform unnecessary magic. One well aimed wind slash should be able to take out both ants, no whirlwind required.

Inzo should try to toss some gob juice inside the mantrap's mouth.
Gallstone 26th May 2018, 3:48 AM edit delete reply
But we need to knock them off-balance first, so they don't spray us with fire.
Better a little mana expense than having to run for Justice for an emergency healing.
Fireopal 26th May 2018, 4:03 AM edit delete reply
We don't need Justice to heal us out of combat. Ranse is perfectly capable of healing us between fights.
Gallstone 26th May 2018, 7:49 AM edit delete reply
But what if Ranse is incapacitated?
Royell 26th May 2018, 8:20 AM edit delete reply
Hmm, could we bring enough of the mantrap back for Lagrand to become inspired from meditating on it?
Since his theme is nature, specifically plants (so far at least) could be useful to let him develope new spells.
Though, definitely some issues we might have with Ranse.

Be patient.
We haven't been to the seaside yet.

Don't have a suggestion, but I made some fanart!
Magister Dicks it 26th May 2018, 12:50 PM edit delete reply
That's it, there should be a fan art, art concept, etc. dedicated tab in the menu of the website
1977 26th May 2018, 12:55 PM edit delete reply
Alternatively someone could make a Wiki.
Fanart is then only a small part of that.
