You begin asking around about this temple, who's in charge, what they do here, etc.

Your first attempt to chat up the clergy goes... poorly, at best.

"We serve the One Holy Goddess."

"Presently, the bishop has us working to establish the church."

They don't really seem interested in speaking with you, the women giving you short, simple answers before returning to their conversation with one another.

It's not until you approach the cleric that's staring off into space that you start to get some answers. You clear your throat, and she snaps out of it.

"Oh! I am so sorry! I was pondering how best to provide food for the poor in Threeroads, I must have spaced out. I've heard that most criminals begin their foray into that lifestyle simply to survive--it's very sad. There would be fewer thieves if we could just take care of the poor."

You ask the blue-haired cleric who this church worships.

"Why, the One Holy Goddess! The existence of demons has been well established--and they have a hierarchy, with demons following the command of devils, who each have ranks of their own. Above them all is one ultimate devil. Knowing that, and that there are a variety of gods and goddesses and angels... it's easy to see that the gods themselves would have an order, a kind of mirror." The cleric is always smiling, but she smiles a little wider. "So of course there is a goddess above all other gods. While many pray to the gods under her rule, we pray instead to her directly, and leave the rest in her hands."

You ask what the clergy are up to, currently.

"We were outgrowing our space in Threeroads. As more people join us and seek our help, we needed a bigger building. So, we moved here, to just outside the city. The cathedral still needs work, but I hope that soon we can get back to aiding the community."

You ask if she knows anything about magic, or if she's heard about the underwear thief. Her smile diminishes, but only for a moment.

"Oh, I am afraid not. I've been too busy to keep up with the news lately, and I don't know anything of magic. Clerics of the One Holy Goddess perform miracles, rather than casting spells. We pray for power from the goddess, and she grants it to her believers."

You ask why all the clerics seem to be women.

"You know, I have never really noticed! That is something. The bishop is a man, but I've never really thought about it!"

something seems very off about this place. i don't know what, but it's just... weird

Don't see it myself.
Nieki 20th May 2018, 2:59 AM edit delete reply
You know, I'm kinda with you on this. Maybe it's personal, but temples and stuff like this make me nervous. As others have suggested, I think we should come back here with a more discerning eye.

It may also be worth asking around IN threeroads about this place...
Mind Fever 19th May 2018, 8:39 PM edit delete reply
Too many red flags here. Investigation required. We should ask about the bishop (what’s his name, what’s he like, is he human, how old is he, etc.) and about miracles. What do they look like, what do they cost to the miracle worker, how are they different from spells and “regular” magic, etc.
Considering what she said about the goddess, they’re worshipping a theoretical parallel. What do they actually know about this supreme goddess? Does she have a name that can be spoken? Questions breed more questions.

+1, but tread carefully.
This blue-haired nun appears to be the most genuinely kind lady in the building so far.
Keep her sweet. Stay polite.

It seems like they simply assume that there is an upper god because the creatures the gods hate have that type of system. I think it's idiotic but we shouldn't tell them that. Also only praying to the highest god as a shortcut isn't how this works, you don't pray to zeus for calm sees you pray to Neptune.
Gallstone 20th May 2018, 4:25 AM edit delete reply
It's possible that this bishop fellow is pulling a fast one, gathering witches to amass power by convincing them of his creed.

I agree that the notion that just because one side has a certain system, the other "must" have the same arrangement is counter-intuitive. Still, we still have much to learn about this world and its supernatural aspects.

In other words, keep an open mind (their one goddess might exist after all), but stay alert.
Too Many Monkeys 19th May 2018, 8:43 PM edit delete reply
Politely inquire about what sort of "miracles" the goddess grant them the power to work.

I still say we claim we're interested in converting to their religion and see where that takes us.

Don't ACTUALLY convert, but use that as an excuse to explore this place more thoroughly.
Mind Fever 19th May 2018, 9:07 PM edit delete reply
No... we look like a magic user. Remember, it’s not just that we don’t want to convert. We CAN’T convert. Rules of magic as told by Ranse. Pretending otherwise makes us look either ignorant or contemptuous of the person to whom we speak.
Krylo 19th May 2018, 9:11 PM edit delete reply
I'd assume they have followers of the faith that aren't priests. Besides most of our party doesn't use magic. Yet.
Mind Fever 19th May 2018, 9:14 PM edit delete reply
Perhaps. We should proceed very carefully. These types of groups can go from smiles to slaughter very quickly.

Side quests
Holy gods
Put a pin in it we have places to go we can’t save the world with a wanted poster with our faces on it we need to goooo
Sonico 19th May 2018, 10:03 PM edit delete reply
Agreed. We already have too many things investigate or deal with already. Let's SOLVE some of our troubles instead of go looking out for more.

Like finding one or more ladies amenable to a group session of loose loving with a goblin tribe, for example.

Maybe if we found some adventurous cleric, good, otherwise, better go to the city to seek some entertainers of loose morals & tastes.
Krylo 19th May 2018, 10:14 PM edit delete reply
It's on the way. It's inefficient not to pick up all the side quests as we go and then do them on the way back.

We need to go to threeroads to get information on disguise potions, and hire an entertainer, and this is right outside. Might as well explore it on the way in.
Jex 19th May 2018, 10:31 PM edit delete reply
Sure picking up side quests because they are there is efficient but you getting back to them in like a year means that no memory of what’s happening or needed to be done is retained and you have to go through all the info with someone who would be annoyed you haven’t done it yet
Mind Fever 19th May 2018, 11:02 PM edit delete reply
You make a good point. However, consider the in-world perspective. Which is more dangerous. An unrealistically successful and lewd thief, or a relatively new cult that appears to encroach on magic itself? As an enchanter, this group of clerics should be quite alarming. Before we leave it is imperative that we find the answer to this question: is this group a threat?
Plus, who knows, maybe the bishop knows how someone could imitate our appearance so precisely. Seems unlikely for a disguise potion.
Mind Fever 19th May 2018, 11:05 PM edit delete reply
At the end of the day, we need more information. We know far too little.
Cloudy 19th May 2018, 11:18 PM edit delete reply
We do know far too little. Let’s go learn more. At the thieves guild. It’s on our already large enough to-do list.
Krylo 20th May 2018, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
There's no good reason not to look into this. It's on the way, it won't take long, and it could be connected to any of the other side quests we have, either directly or indirectly.

What if we find something here that helps with the thieves guild? Or what if we go to town and find the entertainer guild he's had its women go missing, mysteriously (all the nuns are attractive young women), or it turns out the bishop is hiring thieves or there's something in the thief's guild or elsewhere that we need to deal with this but we end up leaving it behind because we don't know we need it because we left? Hell, what if the bishop grows into a larger threat that we could have stopped now?

Honestly, "I don't want to try to remember our quests" doesn't match up to any of the reasons to go. Without even getting into possible rewards.

I agree with Krylo.

Besides, it's an RPG-esque world! You always pick up information as you go along. ^_^
Krylo 20th May 2018, 1:43 AM edit delete reply
Also, see if Ranse can identify the magic of the priestesses, if they have any.
1977 20th May 2018, 1:59 AM edit delete reply
Agreed, especially if that means she has to lick one of them over just like she did with us :)
Gallstone 20th May 2018, 4:27 AM edit delete reply
+1 to Krylo, -1 to 1977.
We don't want to offend this order when we're right inside their stronghold. We have no idea how many of them are witches with offensive spells/miracles, and how many are just trained in the use of weapons.
Crestlinger 20th May 2018, 2:02 AM edit delete reply
Until we hit 25 separate side quests all good. Anything less is manageable. Gotta fetch em all.
1977 20th May 2018, 3:01 AM edit delete reply
Demons and gods have the same hierarchy. OK
At the top of the demons a male devil, at the top of the gods a goddess. OK

Now they just need to make the connection that the highest DEVIL and the highest GODDESS are really HUSBAND and WIFE!!
