Morgenstern
You start by shouting at the ants.

They don't seem to understand you, or care to. They begin to march forward, pincers clacking.

You pull out your wand, giving a big... spiraling... circular motion.

You feel some decent amount of mana drain from you... and a small tornado begins to whip up, kicking dust and leaves into the air as it swirls around in front of you.

You're not sure how potent it really is, but it does give the ants some pause.

"Wh... wh-why," Ranse starts to mutters, but her train of thought doesn't really stay on the rails. "Th-... ants are. Have. S-six legs. What'swrongwiththeseants."

After a moment of the ants evaluating your free-standing cyclone... one of them opens its jaws and unleashes a gout of flame. The blast shoots forward, but doesn't quite make it through your tiny tornado--the wind is powerful enough to at least keep the fire out.

"I've never seen natural ants do that, either," Lagrand states with a smirk. "Monsters are... often best not to think too thoroughly about. How does it produce fire? How do its legs hold up its weight? The answer typically begins and ends with an archmage."

Ranse sighs. "F... f... f-fucking Archmages."

The ants begin to march around your tornado.

Eat the ants!
(Or at least hit them with a lot of magic till they stop moving, and then roast them up. Fireant should be nice and spicy.)

This... could get very dangerous very quickly. We should probably keep our distance, and attack with Lagrande's Treant Needle and a wind attack--we have little to defend ourselves with up close.

Nuh-uh! This is the sort of enemy you don't want to do melee with!

Keep moving and use ranged attacks, maintain the distance. Goblin juice, wood needles, whatever.

I agree, our current party layout doesn't really lend itself to melee. Better to keep our distance and try and pick these ants off before they can close the gap. Ranse can heal incase we get hit with anything.

Once these things are taken care of, we can loot them. Monsters like these usually have bits that are good for alchemy purposes.

Make our escape while the mutant ants are engaged in their death march.

Try the cutting motion with the wand.
In case it doesn't work try a slamming motion, hold the wand up your head and then slam it down like a hammer.

Have Lagrand entangle the ants to keep them at bay, while we slice at them with the want.

The tornado took a lot out of us magic wise. I like the idea of lagrand holding them in place while we slice them up. Would be good practice for us and maybe Ranse as well.

Yes.
Entangle, circle around if it holds, knife and sword them. Wind slice only if it's not too exhausting.
If it goes poorly, try to switch in one of our meleers, see if it can be done mid-fight.

If victorious, open them up and find a way to get some of that fire venom or whatever that is, for our alchemist.

Won't plant type stuff be weak to fire damage?

Reinforce your new clothes and apparel of your group, if that wasn't done before.
