Morgenstern 11th Aug 2018, 9:05 PM edit delete
The girls eventually decide on some of the shopping they want to do.

Heading back to a few previous stores, they purchase one healing potion and two cleanse potions, for a total of 130g.

They sell six of your old iron swords, which... don't sell for much, but do net you about 120g total. You have three wooden shields; Ranse elects to sell one of them for another 10g, making up for the cost of the potions.

"I don't... like. Having odd numbers. Anyway."

With the anchor AND stone zwei at her disposal, Valley decides to get rid of the studded club. She sells it, one scaling knife, and one cutlass for a total of 250g.

Ranse looks at a few different outfits, specifically tailored for alchemists; however, she shows no interest in most of the available attire. ...Though she doesn't say it aloud, the way she analyzes the gear seems to suggest she's gauging them by how thoroughly they hide her ass.

She eventually settles on an outfit for 40g--with a skirt made pretty much entirely of belts (albeit with various pockets and loops for alchemical equipment), and a sort of apron-like top.

...And not much else to it, leaving the majority of her arms and the entirety of her back exposed. The belt-skirt is also, notably, hiked as high as her old skirt (if not slightly higher).

"Like... I was hoping you'd cover MORE, not less?," Valley says with a squint. "You do gotta like... fight or whatever in that."

"I can't... do. H-heavy gear," Ranse replies. "And... thisisstainproof. And, y-you... you'renot. One to talk. With your tits out."

Valley... slowly grins, and nods. "Okay, like... ya got me? That's totally fair." She turns to Justice, trying not to laugh. "Do you like, want better junk while we're here?"

Justice shakes her head. "I feel that representing my church is important--I want people to know I am a cleric when they see me. I do not engage the front lines very often, so... I think it should be fine."

Since they're in the area, the girls also shop around for masks, hoods, and other items to potentially hide your (or anyone else's) identity. ...However, they gradually discover that not many places in town are selling such items, and those that are have very limited--and slightly hidden--supplies.

"What's the deal?," Valley boldly asks one shopkeep. "Like, you have a THIEVES GUILD in town, but you totally don't sell masks and stuff?"

"It's..." the shopkeeper lowers their voice, glancing around. "It's the knights. They've been asking a lot of questions, interrogating anyone and everyone that sells ANYTHING that could hide a face. They've even been stopping shipments at the gates, and harassing tailors from what I heard. It's not worth the trouble, not right now."

They also go shopping for general accessories, which fares a bit better. Items that protect against most status effects are readily available--though, they typically cost in the 200-300g range.

Justice shops around and gets to know a few of the local blacksmiths, all of whom agree they can work with whatever iron they're brought. None of them are mages, but they all are professionals, and can make quality weapons and armor for much cheaper than just buying those items from a shop.

Ranse, with all the talk recently of archmages and forgotten history, picks up a book on Archmage History for 4g. She also does some poking around as... subtly as she can about where the boar actually appeared, when it manifested in town. General consensus seems to be that it popped up near the middle of Threeroads, though... not exactly in the center.

Ranse notes in the journal that the spell might not take things to any one specific spot--definitely something to be mindful of.

The three meet back up around the city square, where a huge quest board stands. Various job offers and missions for aspiring adventurers are posted, most of which are... negligible. An old man needs giant rats cleared from his basement, a local tailor needs way more animal fur, and

someone lost their Ring of Disguise on the east side of town. They even give a whereabouts of which street it was on.

"Oh," Justice remarks. "Perhaps they would be willing to part with it, after it's been retrieved!"

"It'satrap," Ranse states hurriedly. She looks about quickly, as if suddenly expecting knights to come bursting out of the ground. "It... h-has to be. Th... the thieves guild is buying up, disguise things. They... 'd be all over a ring. If... it wasn't stolen in the first place, then... this. Istooconvenient."

"Yeah, like..." Valley scratches her head. "We're not even like, all that connected? But we found out the guild's been totally jacking disguise potions and junk. Pretty much everybody in town's gotta know by now?"

Ranse nods. "So. It would be easiest to just assume, the ringwasstolen. By thieves. P-posting it... on the board like this." She takes a breath, still seeming rather tense. "That... area's either swarmingwiththieves, or."

"...Or it isn't," Justice finishes. "Which would be even MORE concerning."

OOC Note: Just a heads up, updates will probably be coming in a little slower for a while. My momentum took a pretty big hit when Project Wonderful went down, and since then a bunch of RL shit's come up. So, it might be an update every couple of days or so instead of once or twice a day. Sorry, guys.

YetiOlwen 11th Aug 2018, 10:17 PM edit delete reply
I would say to do the cellar rats soon, but maybe not as a top priority. It probably won't be there forever, and it could lead to finding a secret catacombs entrance. Those giant rats gotta be getting in there somehow. Or it could be a dead end, but there's only one way to find out.
YetiOlwen 11th Aug 2018, 10:44 PM edit delete reply
A quick sell off of our animal fur wouldn't be a bad idea either.
MakePeaceAndLove 11th Aug 2018, 10:53 PM edit delete reply
+1 to selling our animal fur, and yeah we can check that out when we've got nothing else to do. With the knights patroling the streets that's the safer kind of combat our ladies would get into.
ZincFingers 11th Aug 2018, 11:44 PM edit delete reply
If by selling the fur you mean turning it into the tailor, I'm on board.
Also, clearing out the rats seems a nice simple task, which as said, might help with the catacombs. Even if it doesn't, helping out townsfolk might help turn them to Nast's side should the party need to vouch for him at any point.

Let's go find the old guy who needs help with rats. There might be a way into the catacombs down there, and hey, animal fur for the other guy. Do rats have fur? We've already got some, a couple more couldn't hurt. Plus we get whatever quest reward from the old guy, I assume.
ZincFingers 11th Aug 2018, 11:46 PM edit delete reply
Good thinking that, taking out the rats first first might net us more fur for the second guy.

MakePeaceAndLove 11th Aug 2018, 10:56 PM edit delete reply
That History of the Archmages is a sweet pick up! And cheap, does nobody really care at this point?

Let's read a few excerpts from it over the next couple updates, shall we? Like with the Chickepedia, we never know what we might learn from these and books can inform our course of action. Or even start quests all on their own, in certain RPGs they work that way.
Krylo 12th Aug 2018, 2:00 AM edit delete reply
The first step to turning a trap back onto your enemies is knowing it's a trap.

That said, I don't have a good idea of how to deal with a knight or thief ambush. Still we may want to check the angles on that street from a bit of a distance and see if we can't spot the trap before we leave town.

Maybe ask around about that street.

But for now let's see the tailor and see if he can trade fairy panties for those skins, and then take care of the old man's rats for money and adventure.

I feel we should be on guard when doing the rats, as well, though. If people are posting traps on the job board, there could easily be more than one trap, and old people basements are pretty tropey as being creepy and awful.
JiggilyJoe 12th Aug 2018, 2:07 AM edit delete reply
Really hoping for an updated high res image of Ranse. Maybe in Patreon?
Devus 12th Aug 2018, 2:19 AM edit delete reply
Why harass tailors? The Thief already has thief gear, there's no reason for him to buy a mask.

Between this, the rush to execute without investigating, and the disguise potions, I smell a giant rat. And it's not the kind that infests basements.

well, they know Nast is somewhere out there, so they plan to smoke him out that way
Devus 12th Aug 2018, 10:52 AM edit delete reply
But they're not supposed to know Nast is out there. They're searching for someone else entirely. They have no reason to set a trap for Nast that wouldn't work on the Thief, unless they already know Nast is innocent, and this is an evil plan of some sort.
Some Random Guy 12th Aug 2018, 7:58 AM edit delete reply

It would technically be a better idea to set traps in a woman's roon, considering what the thief is known for, but sure.
Krylo 13th Aug 2018, 11:24 PM edit delete reply
Remember, the thieves guild saw Nast, ID'd him, know he's an adventurer, and the knights have been harassing them.

They may be looking for Nast, now.
Devus 14th Aug 2018, 5:23 PM edit delete reply
Could be that, yeah.

I remain suspicious until we have confirmation, being that the Thieves Guild is wary about the Knights too. They do have motive though.

So is there anything we want to commission from one of the blacksmiths?
The only thing I could really think we might want is to get some kinda war or battle mace made for Justice. She might like something themed after her religious order to put the pious smackdown on our foes. If her faith has any specific symbols, colors, metals or anything like that it should be easy enough to incorporate into the design.

This may be a bit late, but as one last suggestion, if we do not have enough materials after all, let's use the Mining Sledge in the blacksmithing process.
ZincFingers 12th Aug 2018, 7:55 PM edit delete reply
Hmm, let’s get Justice an actual weapon, rather than repurposed mining gear. Get her input on the design, incorporate the coral if she wants, smelt down the sledge if we need more raw material, all good ideas.

My only suggestion for a possible improvement, ask her about any hymns or specific chant she wishes performed during the making of the weapon, or engraved upon it.
Oh, and if she has any preference as to which blacksmith we use.
RicardtheDragoon 14th Aug 2018, 11:50 PM edit delete reply
I was thinking about how should have a holy hammer, not a regular one, and that is a genius way to go about it. Almost ties in with my thought the other about hymn/prayer books. Though she has likely sung any hymn she knows from her time at the temple multiple times and would have noticed (assumably) any special effects obtained, it is quite likely that hymns/prayers/chants/scriptures could have an entirely different effect when engraved onto a weapon directly.

Vilem 15th Aug 2018, 11:11 PM edit delete reply
While you are waiting for an update on Nast, why not check out another of Morgenstern's Choose Your Own Adventure sprite-based web comics: Blood is Mine. There are over 1100 pages so far.

A nurse wakes up, bloodied and bandaged, in a hospital filled with monsters. She doesn't know how she got here--only that she has to find a way out. What follows is an interactive tale of science fiction, horror, political intrigue, and an ancient conspiracy.

Also, "Blood is Drawn" is a fully illustrated re-imagining of the first chapter of "Blood is Mine." I recommend reading all of Blood is Drawn and then pick up the story at page 42 of Blood is Mine.

Remember to vote for both Nast and Blood on Top Web Comics (TWC). Morgenstern has voting buttons on top and bottom of web page. It doesn't require an account and takes less than a minute. Getting a higher rank on TWC, especially if we can break into the top 100, helps increase the exposure to new viewers. It looks like only about 15 viewers, on average, are voting per day.

Jochi 20th Aug 2018, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
Dunno, but you'll notice the outfit looks a lot like Nast's "yellow enchantery" except for the color. I wonder if that makes it a different school, or if it's just a "red enchantery", or it's just coincidence they look a bit alike.

ZincFingers 21st Aug 2018, 6:03 AM edit delete reply
Well, assuming it’s a “21 or older” scenario, are we saying Mr Red is some sort of Brewery Wizard? A Fermentation-mancer?

Either that or he sells tobacco, potentially pornography...

I’m going to assume the goblin is a fishmonger, if only because I find the idea amusing.
ZincFingers 21st Aug 2018, 7:52 PM edit delete reply
No, wait, I got it. It’s a medieval ice cream shop, and he is advertising how many flavours he has. It explains why he is so heavily insulated, the magic method of keeping his goods cold must be poorly insulated and thus chills the area around it to a noticeable extent.

The goblin still sells fish.

I was planning on saving this comment for the next time we actually saw Nast's party, but- we should probably be careful letting Nast use the Bandit's mask. If he uses the 'Steal' command too much, eventually he WILL end up stealing panties.

That'd be counterproductive to clearing his name.

That'd only happen if the target has panties in their inventory. Steal doesn't take things someone is wearing or holding.
PretenseAndPoison 2nd Sep 2018, 10:51 PM edit delete reply
The description of Steal we got stated it could wind up taking something that we wouldn't be able to loot of their corpse or otherwise obtain from them. It's not too much of a stretch to think 'panties' might be generated by the theft ability.

And honestly, who would be surprised if someone /was/ out there carrying around panties in their inventorty? A spare change of clothes, perhaps? A luck charm? They have an enchantment on them? A spell component? The possibilities are endless.
MakePeaceAndLove 4th Sep 2018, 11:21 PM edit delete reply
I wouldn't be too surprised if we ended up stealing Panties from someone, in fact when we least expect them. It's not so much a question of 'if' but just 'when'.

We can start coming up with an excuse or just keep it simple and deny everything.

Jed, Morgenstern's explanation on his other comic, Blood is Mine, on September 10 regarding his real life situation and how he will be updating:

Morgenstern 10th Sep 2018, 11:42 PM
OOC Note: Yeah, it's been a while. I've kind of had to deal personal/financial issues/nearly losing my dad back to back, and while I've used writing and art in the past as an escape, there comes a point where it gets hard to put myself in a headspace outside my own. It's... probably going to be a while before this improves, so updates will still be really, really slow for a while.

A couple of people have dropped off the patreon, which... yeah. I completely understand. Overall, though, I think it's actually seen a net increase during the hiatus, and that means a lot to me. People aren't giving up, and neither am I. It's just going to take some time for me to get where I can write consistently again. Thank you all so much for sticking with me.

Mildly related (?), I made a game on Kongregate. It started off as busy work to distract myself from various things, but I ended up making a whole game out of it. If anybody has a Kongregate account and wants to give the game a five star rating, it would be greatly appreciated. Game stuff is... an outlet I'm definitely looking into, and I'll be trying to get a few plates spinning in that regard in the near future. Again, thanks.

Yes, Blood is Mine is a great sci-fi horror mix indeed, though i feel a longing for Nast's lighter and raunchier brand of exploration and world-building in the adventure.

Well, we'll have to wait anyway. Good no know Morgenstern is alright though busy.

I just binged it. AMAZING. It always stuns me when a storyteller can tell two amazing stories at the same time with completely different genres.

Not to be pushy or anything, but I would really like to see a full render of Ranse in her new alchemist's outfit sometime soon.
