Justice sits down, and tries her hand at fishing while talking to the kuo-toa. Lagrand... also makes an attempt at it, using his Brambling Hand spell.

Justice asks the kuo-toa about various things--fishing, for starters, but also where he comes from and what it's like.

The kuo-toa explains that he's from a world below, a place far underground. He enjoys fishing, but quickly ran out of places to fish that far beneath the earth--thus, he has ventured to the surface in search of more water. Fortunately, he has found plenty, though he's not too fond of how bright and hot it gets up here most of the time.

Justice also asks him about the cave west of the docks. The kuo-toa tells her that pirates used to come and go from that cave, though he hasn't seen as many ships pass by there lately.

Suddenly, he gets a bite--a big one.

The kuo-toa struggles, his fishing rod bending as he fights against the catch. Valley steps forward, about to help him... but with one strong pull, he drags his catch to the surface.

A... fat, golden fish lands at the end of the dock. It glows, its scales bathed in a glorious light.

"Thou art truly a masterful catcher of fish," states the fish in a very noble tone, "for thou hast caught even I--the golden fish o' wishes. Alas! I am not truly a fish at all, but a golden prince in a fish's forme! If thou wouldst release me back to the oceans, I wouldst grant thee one wish."

Justice translates what the fish says to the kuo-toa.

Lagrand raises an eyebrow. "Is that... ANY wish?"

"And, like," Valley crosses her arm, pondering it herself, "is that totally a wish for all of us, or like...?"

"...Well, err," the fish stammers for a moment, "I admit, mine wishing powers art not as impressive as I wouldst like."

"That is also not an appropriate use of 'wouldst,' I don't suspect," Lagrand points out.

The fish visibly sweats, glancing nervously aside and gulping a bit. He continues undeterred. "Nay, I fear that I can granteth but one wish only tonight, and it shall be of a certain limit in itst power."

"...Itst?," Justice repeats, squinting slightly. "I do not wish to pressure you, your highness, but if that isn't how you normally speak, please don't feel obligated to put on a show for our benef--"

"INDEED," the fish o' wishes declares, "one wish and one wish only. With mine power, I shalt improve one active ability, spell, miracle, or other power from anyone within thy party, active or inactive. I shall upgrade it but once. Ye mayest choose the spell or ability thou wishest to see upgraded thus."

Justice translates to the kuo-toa, who nods, and replies. Justice turns back to Valley and Lagrand. "Our friend says that he is happy simply to have caught such a large fish at all--he doesn't mind letting the fish go, if we would like to accept the prince's offer."

"I am in no way convinced that this fish is royalty of any kind," Lagrand scoffs with a hair flip.

Valley hmmms. "So, like... he'll only bump up one ability a night? We could totally, like... just take the fish with us? And get free upgrades forever?"

"Nay, 'tis not how it doth work!" the fish sputters. "Thou musteth trust me, there are rules to this sort of thing."

"Yes," Lagrand chuckles with a dry smirk, "trust the talking fish with the abhorrent fake accent."

"One active power of thy choosing," the fish repeats. "I shall upgrade it in exchange for mine freedom. No passive abilities, it doth raise too many questions."

Let's boost Justice's healing power!
In an RPG-esque setting, you can never have enough healing oomph. ^_^

On the one hand yes healing is good, on the other hand boosting our healing other ways is relatively easy so I wouldn't want to waste this opportunity on it.

My suggestions:

Return, because teleportation is pretty useful and powerful, but as we've seen the spell is currently too weak to help us out of a tight spot.

Summon HWE (like HtH says), because he's proved so useful already without us even started exploring the possibilities properly. An even better elemental could be invaluable.

I'd also suggest Justice's language skills, but they're apparently passive.

Maybe try Status Martyr upgrade, so justice may use it without incapacitating herself for very long

Healing was my first thought to, but I think we're actually pretty good on that front, honestly. My concern with upgrading LB is that we might be upgrading the summoning, rather than the minion, as in making it quicker or lower mana to make LB appear, but not buffing the lil guy in the process.

I was thinking any of Justice's things first since it makes sense to me to boost some of our party that's more behind right now, and I could see benefits to any of her stuff being more useful than almost any other ability in the party, so (very long way of saying) sure, +1

Hrrrmmm. Does Justice's ability to speak any language count as passive, then? Because if we could upgrade that, maybe we could talk to monsters too! Or at least to *some* monsters.

Okay, in order of what seems best:

Slime Body (Iffy if we can do this) > Para-Touch > Psalm of the Seaway Servant > Poison > Consentacles > Brambling Hand > Earthbreaker > Return > Health Concoction > Healing Touch > Healing Milk > Acid Touch > Treant Needle > Burn Resist Concoction > Status Martyr > Identify + > Identify > Sand Shark > Gob Lob > Detox > Floral Facade.

Reasoning:

Slime Body upgrading could make Emmy into a true shape shifter which would be amazing.

Para-touch is already very strong, and would be stronger yet if it could affect larger creatures and/or last longer.

Little Blue is already great, but Big Blue would be even more amazing.

An upgraded poison could make Nast truly deadly in combat even without a wand.

Consentacles and Brambling Hands are both great for ranged grapples and attacks, though I put consentacles higher as it can deliver para and acid touches.

Earthbreaker is kind of low mostly because I think Valley's best ability is hitting things with her weapon, anyway.

Return being upgraded could make it flat out fantastic, but I mostly put it low because of meta concerns regarding everybody and their brother suggesting we teleport everywhere all the time.

All the healing abilities are low because we seem to be quite capable of keeping our health up as is. The reason for their specific order is that healing concoctions don't take mana, Justice's touch is melee, and healing milk is really awkward/difficult to use in battle.

Acid Touch and Treant Needle lower yet, as neither is super great, and I'm not 100% sure acid touch would even be considered active.

Burn Resist could turn into Burn Immunity but it's still a bit niche.

And everything lower than that I feel is a pretty poor use of an upgrade. What would Status Martyr even look like upgraded? We can already identify things pretty well with either identify ability, Sand Shark is honestly kind of dangerous to use as it splits up the party and puts the tank in a position where she can't protect the squishies, Inzo almost never uses Gob Lob, Detox already does what it's good for very well, and Floral Facade isn't that great of an ability.

Para-touch is such a good ability, but has already gotten us in trouble once with it's limitations. If upgrading it would make it strong enough to work on larger opponents, even just partially, that would be amazing.
That said, I really want to see an improved Blue ^^

Sand Shark might be useful if only for mobility purposes, since it might let Valley move through firmer surfaces when upgraded-- which means we could have one of our toughest people also act as a scout and explore new areas. And tactically, it's *really* important for her to be able to close to melee, so anything that allows her to do that is good.

If Slime Body is an option then perhaps Emerald will be able to form more functional appendages so she can, say, pick locks from the inside?

I would rank status martyr way high. If we could move status effects not only to Justice, but to other party members (or foes) as well it would be just awesome.

But i agree that psalm of the watery servant is good, especially improved by a fish.

First idea was the floral facade though, imagining walking plantlife. Well, prob not the powerful one, so i Will not vote for it anyway.

Slime body is definitely passive, it's the equivalent of bulls strength, just her nature. Consenticle would maybe be the closest to an active version, at least until she learns 'mimic' or something.
Paratouch would be good, longer lasing paralysis could be a fight ender.
I think I vote for Acid Touch or Treant Needle for the reasons Krylo doesn't; they're weaker abilities that need beefing up to be useful to us. Strengthening a basic attack is nearly always more useful than an esoteric ability.

I like that summary Krylo. Personally I think the only abiilities really worth it would be Slime Body, Baby Blue, Para/Acid Touch, Return and Status Martyr. Given that Emmy's abilities likely count as passive, the Psalm is the clear winner here, plus having stronger paralysis or teleportation could... break something, at this early stage of the story especially.

I choose Return to be upgraded.
If it is limited to the party at the docks then I choose Psalm of the Seaway Servant, should get a bigger elemental.

Unfortunately I don’t think Ranse has much in the way of active abilities that really need upgrading. Her most unique is burn resist, and it’s a niche ability. If her Pyrespewer could be upgraded, well then we might be on to something.

Either way I would put Psalm of the Seaway Servant at the top just because I like what little blue can do, and would like to upgrade him,
Next would be slime body (if possible)
Healing from Justice is next.
I would then say Return (if we can do party members not present) followed by poison.
Last would be treant needle.

What do we want to do after our wish? I’m up for a bit more fishing, as we haven’t caught anything for our bird yet, and unless we stick to the original diet we are just wasting our time.

Agreed let's fish some more after this, we haven't even caught anything ourselves. Then regroup at the ranch and send two parties to work... and leave one person either tinkering/meditating/etc. or looking after our chicken, or both.

So, Valley/Ranse/Justice to Threeroads while Nast/Emmy/Inzo head for the cave? If Inzo's Mech gets a swimming function by now it could really own that place.

... then again, what if the cave proves too small for his mech? We could take Lagrand, but we don't really know how large that cave is... we could check it out briefly, before returning to the ranch. >.>

I'd split the party Nast/Emmy/Valley to Threebroads and Justice/Ranse/Inzo to penetrate the slippery grotto. That lets us take on the EG quest in Threebroads, as well as checking for boar effects. As for catacombs, I think that Mel's our ticket to those, and for that we should have Justice, so that quest I think can wait; Boar, EG, and Sweet is enough of an agenda for one trip.

As for the disguise Nast needs: bunny mask and leash (using one of the pelts to make a mask, leather leash, and furry collar). In other words, act like a sex slave. That means either Emmy or Valley would have to take the role of a dom for walking around town; I think Emmy would be good at that, actually. So that leaves Valley as the snarky third wheel; again, she'd be good at that.

Such a group would not be too out-of-place in a town where the Bakers' and Entertainers' guilds are major local attractions.

Another way to configure this would be Lagrand as dom, Nast as sub, and Emmy as mystery 3rd. Lagrand is if anything even better for the part of dom than Emmy; especially because he could easily be taken for a mage. (With his cloak, probably enchanter; which is a relatively safe thing for us to be implying, as it's consistent with reinforced items and even with brambling hand.)

The only problem with this plan is that he might be too serious for a Little Bunny Foo-Foo skit. Though I'm not sure; he might also be able to act as straight man for the skit (ironically).

I think that if we send a team to the cave, it needs to include Emmy. She would be right at home in a slimy underground cave. I would probably put Valley with her as I don't see Inzo's mech doing much good in there, and add Legrand as the third because he has remove poison, and brambling hand might help if climbing is needed. I would also send our new chick with them.
I would then send Nast, Justice and Inzo to go check out the pyre ants.
Ranse could then go clothes shopping.

In that case, why not move towards Tightsend with the Justice/Inzo/XXX party? We need to find the puppeteer sooner or later, and we can always do the cave later when the appropriate party makes sense.

Of course, none of this will play out in the next update anyway, so this is still just theoretical. We haven't even seen what upgrades Inzo has managed yet.

so I'm for upgrading Emmy's shapeshifting or consentacles. Or the Holy Water Elemental. Or Valley's earth shark move.

But indeed somebody already pointed it out, this fish might be the illusionist guy that gave us the bunny suit. should we point that out or will he try to give us a riddle then?

also if we throw the golden fish to the river maybe a goddess will appear asking us if we lost a platinium fish or a diamond one hahahahah (just like that Japanese folk tale of the axe that fell in the river)

Yeah, I'll agree with the apparent majority : Slime Body, if eligible, seems like the best choice.
If not, Consentacles or Brambling Hand, for the same reason : those are fairly similar, very versatile, always useful abilities. More dexterous, strong, malleable versions of it would be great. Emmy's Consentacles woulde be my favorite, but if even that's is too passive to qualify, then Lagrand.

Is Prince Fish at all interested in being turned back into whatever he was before ? We might be able to help ...

As for after... That cave has been taunting us for too long !
Current subparty could probably deal with it but if we want to gather everyone, we can.

This fish seems fishy. I say put it in the inventory and have Ranse lick it or whatever, find out more about. Maybe threaten to feed it to the chick, a wish granting chick seems very useful, or to King Slime. Too bad i'm in a tiny minority regarding this.

Btw, I think we should put vanilla with Ranse on the agenda. Some kissing and hugging and going down on her an missionary next time we're somewhere nice. Think Ranse would appreciate an agenda regarding this sort of thing?

I agree that if slime body counts as "active", we should go for that 100%. But I suspect it doesn't; it's a passive, always-on ability, as Emmy's normal form is just her slime body reflecting her resting body image.

Other good possibilities which various others have discussed are HWE, brambling hand, or consentacles. All of these are versatile abilities with both combat and non-combat uses. However: I think that upgrading any of these has a nontrivial chance of simply being a power upgrade, not unlocking any qualitatively new possibilities.

So, one specific possibility we should consider:

If we upgrade status martyr, it may well increase the range beyond line of sight, and let us move effects to other party members. The range increase would be useful for deliberately springing Mel's trap, which would be fun. And moving effects around would be quite good in combat.

But the clear winner is really floral facade. We really need disguises for Nast, and the obvious upgrade for FF would be to make it work for Nast as long as Lagrand stays still. So Nast could go walking around Threebroads in tree form while Lagrand stood there like an idiot outside the gate. Which is just totally the kind of thing Lagrand would do. Can you just imagine the awesomeness?

Another thing I just thought of: we should definitely cast "reinforce+" on the Staff of Masons itself. That may boost its abilities in some way. At the very least it would improve the possibility of using it as a combat weapon; staves are better than hammers IMO.

Then again, having Justice equip the stave would mean it would not be sitting in the shared inventory for moments when Nast unexpectedly needs [r/d]einforce+. So maybe Justice should just switch to the mason's hammer over the mining hammer.

...

Another random idea: have each party member, including HWE, kiss the fish. That's the standard counterspell for enchanted "princes", and could lead to some NSFW fun... Also, I think the KT might enjoy hearing the psalm purely as artwork.

More seriously, I can see Valley kissing the fish out of the blue, she's good at improv. I don't think Lagrand would do it, too undignified.

Level doesn't really represent much-- nobody learns abilities from leveling, and the level-up messages just summarize what we already know in a pithy humorous form. It's just an abstraction of how many experiences the characters have had, completely uncoupled from their actual effectiveness.

I think it also correlates with "hit points" to some degree. For instance, if Lagrand had been at the level of the rest of the party, he probably could not have survived what the monking did to him

If we upgrade reinforce, will it become reinforce+ without the mason staff? And if we then use the mason staff, would it be reinforce++? Could we do the same to deinforce to make things disintegrate almost immediately?

Aside from this, I don’t think we should buff healing hands, as we have plenty of healing methods and predominantly use them after combat, when we don’t have a time limit. The same goes for any healing ability. I’m curious about how it would work with status martyr, as if wouldn’t just give a resistance to effects. Return could be interesting, as it could reduce time for casting or allow it to take us to a wider variety of places.

Can we buff abilities granted by items? Steal+ might allow us to steal more things or more important things. Tornado+ would get my vote, though, because we use it so often and it is used in a variety of combos. I guess it’s up to you guys.

Steal is an interesting idea.
By the wording, i expect item granted abilities would not qualify, but that fish prince's grasp of english is ... unique enough that it's worth checking.

I'm also curious how improved Re/Deinforce would stack with staff, but I'm not about to burn our one wish in curiosity - much as I want to.

While I think there are one or two potentially more effective abilities, my heart is 100% in on upgrading Little Blue. Assuming Slime Body is a passive, of course.

+1 to boosting any of our amorphous party members.

I can't get over this prince thing.

Is he a prince turned into a shiny goldfish, and if so why is he not interested in turning back ? I've already said it, but offer to help, maybe?
Or are we just unintentionally ransoming some actual legit fish royalty - and if so, is it really worth it ? A friendlier relationship with whatever unlikely fish kingdom he's from might be more valuable.

Or he's just bullshitting us for some reason, either to test how we'd react to a sentient powerful being at our mercy (a knightly virtue focused challenge elemental ?), to have a laugh or some other weird nonsense archmage legacy reason I can't fathom.

Anyway, I'd like to clarify that before any wishing is done.

I am considerably late to the suggestion party, however - for the sake of convenience I'd like to upgrade Ranse's Identify+, and I wish it became "area scanner" - upon activating the upgraded ability, Ranse senses get more acute, focused on particular smell or a feeling. By taking control of her heightened senses, she locates all things of a certain category in area around her - with selection of categories being: "places imbued with magic", "users of magic", "magical items", "known material", "known monster type", with mana cost dependent on chosen area and selected category. Examples of usage: 5 minutes and moderate drain of mana to sense all magic items hidden in a already explored crypt; 10 minutes and heavy mana drain to sense a magic shrine in the forest, 1 minute and minor drain to locate all pyre ants within 50 meters, 1 minute and small drain to sense all things made of steel within 5 meters... of course, the Author would decide what would be reasonable to scan for, and how long it would take / how much mana it would consume.

That's a really powerful - and specific, boost. While making it extremely versatile, too.

Might be a moot point though because Ranse's Identify+ is a passive ability, she can just smell magic on top of other things. And if it did improve, I'd be concerned about the smell of powerful magic overwhelming her at critical times later on - like, her senses are so acute, without the ability to turn them off, that it'd work against her.
