"It may be best to wait until after we summon the spirit," Justice concludes. "Perhaps they will replenish the forge, or have further advice?"

"Totes," Valley replies, still only somewhat paying attention. Justice smiles, and motions toward the ladder; the two head back to the basement.

After filling in Lagrand on what happened, Valley decides to be the one to light the candles. "Like, if a monster pops out, it should TOTALLY be me in front to deal with it?"

She takes the lantern out of the inventory, which is... inexplicably still lit, despite having sat in the inventory this whole time. No one really questions it. Using the lantern, Valley lights one candle... then lights the other with that one, before stashing the lantern again.

The flames of the candles immediately begin to burn green. The stone structures to either side of the shrine light up, as well, in the same phantasmal hue.



And slowly...

a spirit appears.


He speaks in a foreign tongue, his voice deep and resonating. The stones that form the walls seem to reverberate with his speech.

"He says..." Justice begins to translate, "he is an ippon-datara. I believe the closest translation is... 'one legged bellows.' He is a mountain spirit."

"Wrong country and wrong environment, then," Lagrand muses quietly.

The spirit speaks further, and Justice continues to translate. "He says... the mason that was here prayed to him frequently. He accompanied the mason to this land, but has not heard from him in a long time."

Justice, in the spirit's language, informs him that the mason has long since passed--killed by an evil tyrant who was offended by the mason's offered work. That tyrant, too, is long dead.

The ippon-datara is silent for a moment... and then nods, before replying.

"He says..." Justice translates, "that is the fate of a craftsman. To lose one's legs and arms to the forge... to have one's heart explode in the heat of work. To die for what one makes... that is a noble death."

Lagrand fights back a smirk. "Please, do not inform him that I strongly disagree."

The spirit adds something; Justice nods, and translates. "He says that, with the stonemason gone, he has no reason to stay here... but he appreciates us delivering the news. He says the forge upstairs has limited power, but we may use it as we please. It has a mason's passion burning within, and will improve any stone offered to it."

"Ooh!," Valley speaks up. "Ask him why the mason's stuff looks so different! Like, this shrine LOOKS foreign, but like... the knights outside, and the zweihander... I would've never thought our dude was from overseas?"

Justice nods, and asks the question--more eloquently, to be sure, but she does ask. The spirit give its reply... and Justice translates. "He says... the mason was gifted, and determined to serve his lord in THIS country. He learned to imitate the style of our armor, our weapons, our architecture. Back home, his work was very different."

but the spirit has been pretty chill so far so i guess it wouldnt hurt?
not really sure what reason we could give to the spirit for it to join us tho :\

Also, this place is in a pretty remote, safe location. This could be one of our Return points once Nast gets familiar with it, right?

Ask if there is anything that we could do to honor the stone mason's memory, or assist the spirit further. Since he's fairly congenial after being summoned, he may like being summoned, and Justice is apparently already on the way to being a decent summoner with BBJ there.

I second this. I’d prefer to not flat-out ask the spirit if he wants to join us because, A, only Justice understands him. B, I think I’d want some alone time after finding out somebody I respected had passed.

At least, I think he respected the Mason. He seems upset about it I’d think. Besides, he said the Mason’s spirit is what fuels the forge, so I’m not even sure he could be the one to kindle it.

So is this spirit looking for more crafters to be a patron to, or even just interested in chatting with them? Inzo is... very much not like the typical craftsman from his country, I suspect :P but he might find interacting with him interesting, if nothing else. Just as long as we make sure to warn him of Inzo probably being less respectful than he'd normally expect XD

I think more generally, does this spirit want to leave in peace/pass on without more people disturbing him, or would he live more action/to continue his work? That's our starting point, I think.

Should... Shouldn’t we just ask him what HE wants to do, first? He’s still a sapient, thinking person. Spirit or not he probably still has his own preference for what he wants to do.

If Inzo is going to be in the same room, we’d probably want Nast there as well, to help smooth over any incidental offences committed by the goblin.

Offerings?
Find a worthy new craftsman?
Rock smoothies?

Then, if the spirit is happy, is it possible to renew the forge?

Since the spirit has out of it's element and without it's friend for so long, maybe we should lead it to the mountain north of Peace Calling?
Who knows, it might become a guardian deity, making traveling through the mountains easier.

Now that’s an interesting idea. Might want to try and feel out what the spirit plans on doing next before we suggest it. But still, it has potential to turn out awesome.

Can't hurt to offer, but I'm sure it has a home region already. And not every traveler will be a craftsman.

The Lore says they prefer a reclusive life in the mountains. It would probably prefer dealing with craftsmen that are willing to seek it out at their peril, than being stuck in some populated area where any blow-hard with a hammer can bother it.

We don't have a dildo in our inventory either.

However, it is an interesting idea to give the forge a stonedildo to improve.

Neid was a complete and utter ********.
The stonesmith came all that way, changed his working style, worked for years to please him... and that no-count archmage murdered him and his family for it.

This is quite a sad story. :(

Looks as if this quest is wrapping up, so it's reasonable to consider what to do next. Here's what's on my mind:

Party B:
* Check in on Inzo. How's the crab mech coming?
* See if Inzo and/or Valley can carry a relatively large supply of holy water to the coffin, so we can do that quest. I think having lots of holy water would be a good thing for that. And definitely it's a daytime quest if there's not some deus ex machina to make it nighttime.
* Mine quest??
* Ask around for satyr? At the very least, ask Inzo and Ranse's dad if they know anything about him. Maybe ask other NPCs around Tumbletart and/or the goblin village too.

Party A:
* Assume they have found some way to dismount safely. Possibly give the exhausted pig to the ranch? Or to the Summoner if we run into her?
* Go to Threebroads to see if the first boar did damage and if so if there's any way to fix it. Some work on disguise is probably necessary first.
* Little bunny foo-foo skit to get into the Entertainers' Guild. Or anything similarly over-the-top. We're going for a MST3K or Rocky Horror "so bad it's good" vibe, I think that with Nast and Emerald we can hit that mark and get into the guild.

I think that's enough planning for now. I do want to deal with the other Threebroads characters (Sweet and Mel) and to go to Tightsend to look for the puppeteer but those can wait until after the above.

When we return to Nast's party I think it's better if we let our party rest for the day. And spend a fun night. If so much time already passed then I think it'll be less suspicious if we arrive in Threeroads the next day and see how much damage the boar caused, simply assuming it was dealt with by the locals.

Plus, if the knights are so strong they should've stopped it without breaking a sweat, so I wouldn't worry too much about Threeroads. >.>

Yay, the spirit is friendly. :)

+1 to making conversation, telling about the nearby mountains, learning about its home country, asking if there's a way we can replenish the forge, asking what it plans to do now, if there's anything it would like us to do for it, etc. It would be neat if it decided to stick around but we should respect its wishes. Justice seems to be doing a good job of talking respectfully to the spirit, just make sure to thank it for its time when it leaves.

Now that Valley has 2 strong weapons, she should practice swapping them out quickly in battle, maybe even come up with some attacks that use both of them in rapid succession. Hook shot an enemy and then hit it hard with the zwei when it's still moving towards her, for example.

If we can't get the furnace/forge recharged, I'd suggest the gauntlets for our last stone item. Nobody can use the tower shields, nobody uses helmets now, and the gauntlets might just work intensely well with whoever is wearing the Belt of the Brawler.
