There's a brief silence as everyone weighs the options.

Even though it was Valley who presented the situation, she's also the first to voice an answer for it. "We should totally light the candles."

"I agree," Justice replies. "We can befriend the spirit! They may even join us."

"I believe you are BOTH making dangerous assumptions about this spirit..." Lagrand begins, but then gives a nonchalant (and yet somehow fairly dramatic) shrug. "However; I am but a background player in this tale. It is not my place to dissuade you, should this be the turn of events you wish to pursue."

"Phsyeah whatever," Valley scoffs. "You toootally wanna see what happens too, you can just like... admit it?"

"IF we're going to do this," Lagrand states, completely ignoring Valley's comment, "we should do it appropriately. The fires from the forge upstairs may be the best method of lighting these candles."

"Yeah, but like," Valley bobbles her head side to side, "I don't wanna haul my fat ass up and down that ladder more times than I have to? Like, that climb was more bogus than fighting the golems was."

Justice grins, fighting back both a sigh and a shake of the head. "I will go claim the fire, if you two will watch Baby Blue Jr for me."

Justice ascends the ladder out of the basement, grabbing a random stick from the surrounding woods before heading back into the workshop.


Despite holding the stick through the grating and into the glowing green flames... the stick does not catch on fire.

In fact, it doesn't seem to burn at all.

Justice definitely feels a heat coming off the forge. Strangely, the fire from this specific forge doesn't seem to affect wood.

Take a candle from the altar to the forge, see if we can light it that way and take it back.

Light the candles with conventional flame despite Lagrand's advice.

+1 to trying one of the candles from the altar.

That or a stone, but if it catches fire then the entire stone would grow hot, which can make it difficult to hold. Also, heat makes stones shatter, so... ehh, let's just hope that magical forge fire somehow lets it work.

My first thought was stones, but if we really try other things in our inventory I guess one of the old iron swords would be my choice.
Normally you burn wood to form the metal in a forge, here you form stone into a new shape it would make sense for metal to burn.

Try burning stone.

We have 2 piles of rock, we can sure spare one stone to use as a torch.

Unless justice has a better method, since it doesn't affect wood, if rocks do catch fire, lagrand could brambling hands a stone. This solves the potential problems of the stone becoming to hot to hold, wood doesn't conduct heat well, and his arm "shouldn't" burst into flames.

Alternatively we could just wedge a stone in a bundle of sticks, or tie one to a stick with the reinforced vines,

The phantom candles burn cold - I’d go with bramble-hand and a stone or piece of steel (whichever actually lights).

wow a lot of people think stone is gonna burn on this green flame
i think the furnace itself is made of stone though so that makes zero sense?
so im going to list a bunch of other things we came up with in the discord and maybe we could try them.

I mean, forges are designed to melt metal but are often made of metal. Magic selective fire might burn stone, but if it is for forging stone it'd make more sense if it heated stone but didn't burn it away. I'm concerned that it might not catch on anything, if it doesn't need fuel, but not trying anything is a bad suggestion so I'd say try stone, and then anything else that isn't expensive if that doesn't work.

Justice can feel heat from the fire, yet wood placed in it is unaffected. By the sound of things, it doesn't even heat up. Given that we are trying to summon a spirit, an element given life, it's entirely possible that the forge burns life force - justice feels heat from it, but dead wood is unaffected. Try burning rocks, as others have suggested, but if that doesn't work, try the stone heart and page and lagrand's brambles (not in that order)

While your logic is solid, -1 on the heart. I don't want to accidentally turn it into a magical super golem by shoving an animating force into it.

Also, there should be lore about rocks. That would r... sorry, that's pretty bad, isn't it?

As for the current ish, I think we should try rocks then iron then the phantom candles. Obviously don't keep trying if one works.

The pick was lodged in the forge. This thing might light the tools, or we can try a rock.

+1 to trying the tools. Any agreement between the mason and the spirit seems like it would involve them, and they were required to open the passage to the shrine in the first place, so they're clearly important.
If that doesn't work, I think it'd be interesting to try the Zwei, as it's tied to this area too, but I realize that may not be a popular opinion.

If you go back and forth fast enough between this page and the previous one, you can make a little animation of Valley turning back and forth. :)

+1 on trying to carry the flame with a stone, but I'd vote for trying it with the zwei or a zwei from another statue or something instead of just a regular rock; while it seems likely that this fire can *only* burn stone or maybe metal, I'd rather not find out the hard way that it can hurt us. Unfortunately, since Valley is the only one strong enough to easily lift those, that would mean she'd have to climb the ladder again (sorry Valley). Trying to use the tools to carry the forge fire also seems like a good idea and I think we should try that, but I don't think it'll work; it's a forge for a *stone*mason so it's probably meant for burning *stone*.

Valley may need to use the stone sword(I forget the formal name) to carry the flame. However, Justice May enjoy seeing her bounce her way up and down the ladder.
