You ask the tavernkeep about any recent rumors or work to be done.

"Jus' the usual, officers. Hunters are sayin' there's a witch in the woods to the north, causin' all sorts o' dangerous monsters to show up. Makes it hard to gather mushrooms, what it is. The family what runs the potion shop are offerin' a reward if some strappin' young hero could deal wif that. The slimes've been gettin' nastier, too--had some boys in here the other day sayin' they'd seen a king slime out in the fields. Prob'ly the witch again. S'always a witch."

You also ask about the panty thief, and what he's heard about that.

"Heard they caught 'em," says the tavernkeep. "Got 'em locked up right now, knights oughta be here in the morn. Gods have mercy, word is the king's right pissed about the whole bleedin' event."

You and Valley head across the tavern to talk to the drunk. She stumbles to her feet to meet you.

"Oy," she slurs, "whaddya want?"

You make some small talk, trying to get her in a better mood. Over the course of it, she slowly begins to eye the studded club on Valley's back.

"Tha's a good weapon yer cow's got there," the drunk says. "Good fer clearin' a crowd o' mooks... no good fer fightin' one skilled baddie, though."

"Did you just, like, call me a cow?," Valley protests. "Ummm what's your damage?"

"Calls 'em likes I sees 'em," the drunk replies. "Ya look past due fer milkin', lass."

Valley steps forward, throwing her shoulders back a bit. "I, like, toootally don't need to hear that from some grody wino."

The drunk woman chuckles, stumbling a bit. "If ya wanna step up lass, I got th' time. Or step down, whatever, ya big--"

"Hey!," the tavernkeep shouts. "No fightin' in my establishment."

OK, we played our part. Slyly suggest to Valley with a whisper. "Maybe someone big and strong should teach her a lesson, ever broken a horse before?"

...what... what the fuck?

What? We need someone to play bad cop. Horse was a bad example.

(Though I do admit I am testing the limits of this too, the world, it's physics/rules and the author)

as amusing as it would be to see valley turn this lady into a pancake, we really don't have time for this puffery. it's only a matter of time before the other guards realize nast is missing. wasn't there a potion shop or something in this town? maybe it would be a good idea to pick up a disguise potion for an extra layer of camouflage, and then decide where we're going. the witch might be a good stop, witches usually have their ears to the the ground.

Considering the witch is... Well, a witch, and has the power to create especially majestic piles of sentient goo, it's probably not a good idea to go right at her. Since we have a day before the knights show up: why not try to make some money? Head out, and use Valley's club as it was meant to be used, by completely eradicating some sentient goos!

Who said anything about fighting against the witch or the slimes. Instead befriend everyone, after all we KNOW they throw innocent people into prison to behead them which means we should befriend everyone they consider a threat.

Take the "Collect Mushrooms" quest.
1) magic mushrooms for fun and profit
2) maybe we can recruit the witch
3) we can get paid while doing this
