You inspect the blue powder in one of the stone bowls more thoroughly. You cast Identify--but it doesn't read as anything in particular. It may still have odd, latent alchemical properties, but you don't sense any real magic on it.

On a whim, you wander over to the candle sitting next to one of the chests and pick it up. The flame--also blue--puts off no heat, strangely enough.

...If anything, it actually feels a little colder near the flame. You acquire a phantom candle.

You take the candle over to one of the braziers, and try lighting the powder on fire. It takes a second... but the flame catches, soon turning into a bright blue blaze.

One of the blue spheres in the stone door seems to shimmer a little brighter.

"So when we light the other one..." Justice begins, "that should open the door. Correct?"

"Totes," replies Valley.

Since you don't know what lies beyond the door, you decide to take care of anything you have left in HERE before you open it--and that means the two chests casually hanging around.

You head to the chest on the right, and attempt to open it. It takes effort, to be sure--the lid is heavy, but you manage. You open it juuust far enough...

to spot some kind of mechanism attached to the underside of the lid.

Before you can let go and get away from the chest, something sprays you in the face--some sort of gas. You immediately feel a sharp jolt running through your body, one you've experienced before--paralysis. It affects you despite two layers of cloth over your mouth... which makes you suspect it was the skin contact more than the breathing that made the vapor do its work.

"Nast!," Valley and Justice yell. Over their voices, you barely hear something opening up in the ceiling above you.

You feel a harsh, dull weight slam into the top of your head, almost dropping you to the ground. The paralysis wears off quickly, and you glance over to see what hit you.

...It appears to be an old cooking pot, rusted so thoroughly that a hole has worn through it. You look up, and watch as a series of pulleys shuts the trapdoor in the ceiling, its surface colored identically to the dirt and rock that surrounds it.

So, that's a thing.

So we should be a bit more cautious about the other chest. Hopefully if it is trapped it has aged as poorly as this one.

Might as well check inside the one we have opened. Maybe we can salvage some of the trap mechanism as well.

Also take the cooking pot.

Take everything that ain't bolted down, even trash can be sold, or recycled for materials later.

On our way out take all the candles.
Caydenite 19th Jun 2018, 12:48 PM edit delete reply
+1 to an excessively thorough looting before moving on.
Krylo 18th Jun 2018, 10:51 PM edit delete reply
Loot the trapped chest, and then have the elemental open the other one. It's probably not going to be affected by poisons, and even if it is--better summon take the hit than a friend.
ZincFingers 18th Jun 2018, 11:02 PM edit delete reply
I don’t think our liquid friend is strong enough to open them.
Jex 18th Jun 2018, 10:52 PM edit delete reply
Maybe open the other one from behind, and make sure that we aren’t all crowded around the possible trap area. Then light to other brazier.
ZincFingers 18th Jun 2018, 11:20 PM edit delete reply
Depending on how it all works, Valley might be able to push the chest out of the danger zone.
Thorulf 19th Jun 2018, 10:11 AM edit delete reply
The other possibility was that the braziers should have been lit before the chests opened, but at this point, keep going. Guard against the possibility of a trap, though.
Gandalf 19th Jun 2018, 10:46 AM edit delete reply
Good question: do the chests also open (or at least get disarmed) when the door opens, or will we need something from the chests to open the door (or deal with what's behind it)? In other words, chests first or door first? Also: did we get the first chest open, or did it fall shut when the trap went off?

Either way, the chests are now more of a known quantity than the door is, so continue with them for now before progressing to the door.

Maybe see if we can use the howie to examine them somehow without springing any more traps on us?
JiggilyJoe 18th Jun 2018, 10:54 PM edit delete reply
Yep, let's stand to the side and open the chest again.
Maybe a little healing first...
Not sure about how to open the other chest, but I'm sure its trapped too.
ThatGuyWhat'sMadeofCheese 18th Jun 2018, 10:59 PM edit delete reply
Sooo, Grampa wanted to warn us about traps, I take it?
MakePeaceAndLove 18th Jun 2018, 11:01 PM edit delete reply
If so then mission accomplished

Open the other one only a little, stick the stone zwei under the lip and use it as a lever to completely open chest.

While it does seem that this is the spot for the anchor, can we still cast identify on it to make sure? Is it permanently stuck in the door at this point, or just resting there until it opens?
ZincFingers 18th Jun 2018, 11:50 PM edit delete reply
That is a good idea, once we have the other brazier lit, cast Identify on the anchor again, since that was the original trigger for it guiding us here.
MakePeaceAndLove 19th Jun 2018, 12:01 AM edit delete reply
+1 might be just what we've been missing
G. Sansa 19th Jun 2018, 10:59 AM edit delete reply
Also if necessary manipulate the blue gems. If that still doesn't work have Howie do it.

(Can we ask Justice to name Howie so it's official? Fine if she chooses a different name.)

Pffft~! ^_^ Looks like Grandad had an impish sense of humour.

Open both chests from the side.
Valley should be strong enough to lift the lid, maybe using the stone zwei as a lever.

Once we're done here we should take all the candles.

Loot the chests and see if there are clues in the insides, maybe something written in them.

When lighting the other brazier is not enough on it's own then identify the anchor again, that should trigger it.
Eyebrows 19th Jun 2018, 1:17 AM edit delete reply
Hold the shield above your head when opening chests. Actually hold it above valley's head while she opens it.
And have Justice ready to use status martyr.

Thought just struck me; we want Nast to read some of the books, but if Ranse, Inzo or Lagrand haven't and they'd like to and have time, maybe leave a note for them that the arcane lore & history books are research?
ThatGuyWhat'sMadeofCheese 19th Jun 2018, 5:06 AM edit delete reply
I just started reading a couple of days ago, and I didn't read many of the comments while catching up, so if I'm repeating things others have suggested, sorry. Anyway, before we open the door, (since there may be a boss battle of some sort,) we should make sure we've cast reinforce on all of the party's cloths and weapons. Even if it doesn't add a point or two of armour like I think it will, it will at least help keep any of it from being damaged from wear&tear and/or battle. We don't have a super convenient way to repair things, (yet,) and money is still very much an object, so having to replace things too often may weigh on the wallet.
1977 19th Jun 2018, 5:10 AM edit delete reply
Reinforce is always cast on any new equipment the moment we equip it. I don't think there is anything that isn't reinforced right now. We made a habit out of this very early on.
TGWMoC 19th Jun 2018, 5:29 AM edit delete reply
Huh, I guess I missed that. Good to hear though. Also, I made an account, woo!
LytharWolfe 19th Jun 2018, 6:25 AM edit delete reply
Grampa? You're a dick.

Also yeah, traps, shoulda expected that in a dungeon...
Green Visitor 19th Jun 2018, 7:30 AM edit delete reply
I think Justice and Valley should have a little fun on Nasts expense before the paralysis (hopefully) wears off.

Then carefully inspect the content of the chest Nast opened. Maybe using one of the old swords for leverage and wooden shields and cloth for protection.

Repeat for next chest, but be suspicious for anything-traps from floor, roof of wall.

Then lit the second brazier as planned.
1977 19th Jun 2018, 7:49 AM edit delete reply
The paralysis didn't last to the end of the page.

Just thought about the mobile base we were planning to build some time ago.

It should definitely have a forge, seeing how many scrapmetal we collect here in form of old swords, rusty pots and the abandoned mining equipment outside.

I think at some point we should also look into getting a Piggu as a pet.
It could even help us in finding the last ingredient for Ranse's dad, the fungus.
Guest 19th Jun 2018, 11:26 AM edit delete reply
Plus one for Piggu!

Since the elemental is holy water, and water has surface tension, shouldn't reinfore increase the water's strength and surface tension properties? That would allow it to hold objects better and last longer!

However, the properties of science might work differently in this world of magic and alchemy. You should try it anyways!
Guest 19th Jun 2018, 11:27 AM edit delete reply
Maybe cast deinforce on the hinges of the chest, and try to pry it off backwards while peeking?
Gandalf 19th Jun 2018, 4:03 PM edit delete reply
Deinforce! Good shout, we all forgot about that.
Caydenite 19th Jun 2018, 12:45 PM edit delete reply
Ask Justice her new minion's name.
Jochi 19th Jun 2018, 1:59 PM edit delete reply
So, has everyone dropped the idea of treating the right brazier differently than the left? Specifically, using (holy) water instead of (phantom) flame? I still think Valley and Justice are making the obvious and incorrect guess, but I guess if that is true, best case is the powder in the right brazier will not ignite and worst case the water will put it out.
But open the chests first. And we need Sweet or Mel or someone like them in the party for dealing with traps.
